The idea that reality, our reality, can only be a computer simulation, a virtual reality, is not new. Do you remind Morpheus‘s talk to Neo in Wachowski brothers “The Matrix”?
What is real?
Morpheus: “What is real. How do you define real? If you’re talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain”.
We already talked about one year ago, taking up the astronomer Rich Terrible words according to which the idea that our univers is “a sort of digital jail” created by some alien civilisation in which “everything we do, consciousness, memories, feelings, are the product of a calculation code drawn up by a setup of computers under extraterrestrial supervision” is not that crazy.
Elon Musk: we could all be in Matrix
But never before an enterpreneur like Elon Musk, PayPal cofounder, then founder of SpaceX and Tesla has ever expressed in so clear terms. Instead Musk, talking at the Re/code conference in California, has proposed these considerations: if there are cases where you can have realistic simulations of the universe, then is possible that we could all be living in a simulation.
At the end, pointe out Elon Musk, “Forty years ago we had pong. Like two rectangles and a dot. That was what games were”, now we have photorealistic, 3D simulations with millions of people playing simultaneously and soon we will use virtual reality and augmented reality technologies in our daily lives. “If one assumed further improvement, then games are going to be indistinguishable from reality”, explained the American enterpreneur.
Elon Musk’s words are just a Summer taunt or are we already living in a Matrix? It’s impossible for now to give an answer, since we are not able for now to get out of this reality, nor to know what, potentially, exists beneath of it.
